Gordon Setters

I must begin my report by apologising for the delayed start due to unexpected snow on the M74.
However, considering this I was honoured to find there were surprisingly few absentees and those in attendance were generally well presented.
I have seen the temperament of this breed deteriorate over the last 30 years or so, as breeders have striven to produce dogs with ring presence, perhaps misinterpreting the requirement for boldness, so I was very happy to find that almost all the dogs displayed the kindly even disposition of a working gundog, which is after all, their primary function.
Unfortunately, the quality of the tan has gone, no longer is there the rich ripe horse-chestnut red that differentiated the Gordon from other black & tan breeds.
Whilst none of the dogs were overweight, I would have liked to see a generally harder condition, and some could be under better control, though I obviously sympathise with those who have this challenge.
Notwithstanding, I was pleased with the depth of quality in the entry, which made for some difficult decisions.
However, I had no hesitation in selecting my Best of Breed, despite her being slightly “out of coat”.
I am aware that her owner was surprised to be placed as highly because of this, but many misinterpret the breed standard’s requirements in this area. Most aspiring judges, and not a few A list, would do well to note that the standard calls for “moderate length” and allows that “fringes on the belly MAY extend to chest and throat”. This, combined with the specified regard for faults, would indicate that those dogs which can be described as “dripping in coat” are further from the required standard than dogs without. Additionally, being out of coat is a natural cyclical state, whereas excess coat is a permanent tendency which breeders should look to eliminate.
Being out of coat does not stop a dog from working on a heather grouse moor, whilst excess coat can be a hindrance !
And so to….

OPEN FIELD TRIAL (2,1)
1 Thomas’s Chartan Purple Patch B, Lovely, compact bitch. Sweet balanced head, low ear set. Lean arched neck leading to good front. Nice length, sound quarters. Correct coat. Sound movement. Alone but worthy of her place.

SPECIAL VINTAGE (7,3)
1 McNeil’s Barrabrae Ice Maiden JW B, Balanced head and good conformation, still moving well, showing how a Gordon should last, would just prefer a clearer tan.
2 Wright’s Aonachdubh Kelpies Pearl B Oldest exhibit but also still has good conformation, movement not quite as consistent as 1, and starting to show her age, but still a good example of the breed.
3 Smith’s Florcott Dream Angus D

VETERAN DOG (2,1)
1 McNeil’s Barrabrae Misty Thyme D, A bigger dog but not heavy with it, like his dam above nice balanced head, sound conformation and moved well. Clean tan but just starting to pale with age. Also alone but worthy of his place.

PUPPY DOG (4,0)
1 Searle’s Scaraben Scottish Pioneer D, Upstanding young dog, mature for age, balanced in body with correct conformation. Pleasant head, deep not broad, with kindly expression. Moved well. Just a little full of himself.
2 Millar’s Lainnireach Highland Way D, Another typical youngster, with good conformation. Head nice, but not quite as deep in scull as 1. Tan clean, but prefer slightly darker. Movement was fine for age. He’s just a bit raw.
3 Danks’ Liric Blac Nugget D

JUNIOR DOG(4,0)
1 Phillips’ Lochfain An Aus Approach to Glenmaurangi D, Another strong mature dog. Well balanced throughout. Typical head with parallel lines & deep scull. Clean tan which I would prefer to be a little richer. Correct flat coat. Moved soundly on strong legs and neat feet.
2 Searle’s Scaraben Scottish Pioneer D
3 Millar’s Lainnireach Highland Way D

SPECIAL YEARLING DOG(3,0)
1 Green’s Balnakiel Cul Beag D, Looks smaller than many but is nearer standard size. Has an intelligent kind expression. Good conformation, sound quarters and moved with drive. Has very balanced front construction and tight oval feet which won him this class.
2 Phillips’ Lochfain An Aus Approach to Glenmaurangi D
3 Wilson’s Black Devil’s Iron Man D

NOVICE DOG (4,1)
1 Craddock’s Dunfionn Nave D A well coated dog, but underneath good conformation and not too big. Head in proportion, good front and sound quarters make a balanced dog that moved well. Would benefit from more positive handling.
2 Cairn’s Chartan Elijah Blue D Not quite as heavy in feathering and with straighter more typical coat than 1, strong head with well constructed front, body & ribs but would prefer a little more length from hip to hock. Not quite the flowing driving action of the winner.
3 Pearce’s Ardnadam Red Kite D

GRADUATE DOG (4,1)
1 Turner’s Moniack Black Magic D Sound traditional type. Nice balanced head with low ear set, well constructed front. Good in ribs and strong loins but would prefer more bend of stifle. Overstetching the hindlegs exaggerates this. He is, however, very sound and moved well when he got it all together. Would like a darker tan. Not wanting to stand still, would benefit from firmer handling.
2 Danks’ Liric Tuxedo Rag D Well coated, I liked his head and expression. Good body and chest but would prefer a better layback of shoulder and slightly less bend of stifle
3 Phillips’ Lochfain An Aus Approach to Glenmaurangi D

POST GRADUATE DOG (6,0)
1 Wilson’s Busby of Flying Hunter D, Smaller dog with good conformation. Handsome head with kindly expression but would prefer slightly less broad in scull. Good front, correct length of body and sound well constructed quarters. Correct flat coat, not overdone, with clear tan. A pleasure to watch on the move. Could take more positive handling.
2 Smith’s Yennadon Carrick D, A bigger stronger dog also presenting a balanced profile. Lovely balanced head with kind expression. Not quite as firm in front movement as 1
3 Ness’ Boyers Strauss D

MID LIMIT DOG (5,1)
1 Shields’ Liric Regal D, Performance improved from the last time I judged him as a youngster, now showing how he can move, but still a fidget standing. Head now more in balance but a little heavy for my preference. He has a good conformation with strong quarters, hocks could be a little firmer. Short coupled body presenting a balanced overall picture.
2 Harrison’s Paradise Albus D, Slightly heavy in head for my preference and neck could be leaner. Correct coat, though a little overdone. Good conformation whilst not as short coupled as 1. Did not move with enthusiasm.
3 Smith’s Yennadon Carrick D

LIMIT DOG (3,0)
1 Lay’s Kilnrae Designer Label at Amoreira D, Still the dog I liked 3 months ago, moved well, but the small indoor ring did not allow him to move quite as powerfully as I know he can. He is a strong well boned dog, but still full of quality. Excellent head & expression, difficult to fault his conformation which gives him such flowing setter lines. BD RBIS
2 Clark’s Dunfionn Kiel of Clohass D, Like 1 has an excellent head & expression but not quite as perfect conformation as I feel he is a little too long in body. Moving soundly behind with plenty of drive but would prefer if he was a little tighter in front.
3 Shield’s Somerled More Than A Dream D

OPEN DOG (3,1)
1 McKnight’s Shannas Wave Dancer of Tarcoulter D, A lot to like, nice head, good front, short coupled. Correct straight coat not overdone though tan could be clearer and darker. Moved well. Longer from stifle to heel and not quite the depth of chest of the Best Dog winner.
2 Davidson’s Shannas Petrochelli at Glenquest JW D, Another attractive dog, but compared to 1 slightly heavier head, marginally longer, exaggerated by being rather long from stifle to heel, coat not as flat & tan not as clear. Still moved well

VETERAN BITCH (9,3)
1 Ives’ Glenquest Gemsique B, Excellent conformation and movement that belies her age. Well proportioned head with kind expression & lovely dark eye. Long neck, good front, sound quarters. In good coat of correct type.
2 McErlean’s Suilvenmhor Sunna of Carrochan B, Of similar type with good conformation, but not quite as refined as the winner. Sound movement but not quite as happy moving as 1
3 Green’s Balnakiel A’Choinneach B,

PUPPY BITCH (4,0)
1 Green’s Balnakiel Carn Na Caim B, A sweet little bitch giving an excellent overall impression, head nicely balanced in profile with a gentle intelligent expression, would just prefer her slightly less broad in scull. Long lean neck into well laidback shoulders Good conformation with sound quarters. Presenting a balanced picture with clean lines, clean tan & flat coat. Moved very nicely. BP
2 Cuthbertson’s Lainnireach Whisky Lass B Pretty bitch of similar type, more correct in scull proportions but not quite as refined in head as 1. A touch heavier. Would prefer slightly more length in upper arm and steadier movement.
3 Pearce’s Ardnadam Willow Grouse B,

JUNIOR BITCH (3,1)
1 Beagle’s Bryerdale Morris Dancer B, Traditional type, nice head on good neck & shoulders, sound quarters, presenting a balanced picture and moved well. Maturing nicely and showing promise.
2 Pearce’s Ardnadam Willow Grouse B, Raw young bitch, not helping her handler, head not quite as good as 1 and would prefer a leaner neck, but nicely put together. Tan dark and clean. Just needs to mature.

SPECIAL YEARLING BITCH (3,1)
1 George-Plunkett’s Melkinmere Elterhow B, Nice compact bitch, with good conformation, presenting a balanced picture. Correct coat with clean tan. Moved well with drive, to cap an excellent performance. Would just prefer a sweeter expression, but a very promising bitch and I will watch her progress with interest.
2 Beagle’ Bryerdale Morris Dancer B,

NOVICE BITCH (2,0)
1 Gray’s Kattandale Calcutta Cup B, Sound traditional type that I like, steady intelligent expression, good front, nice length, strong quarters, moved well. Correct coat with clean tan, just lacked a bit of presence.
2 Pearce’s Ardnadam Willow Grouse B,

GRADUATE BITCH (4,1)
1 Clark’s Dunfionn Onich of Clohass B Another nice bitch in the traditional style. Strong but pretty head with good chiselling, though could be a touch longer right through. Good front, correct length of body, strong quarters, which enabled her to move well with plenty of drive. Correct coat with clean tan but would like a touch darker
2 Cuthbertson’s Gaidheal Tosca of Lainnireach B A heavier bitch and not quite the quality in head of the winner. Good shoulders but would like a slightly longer upper arm. Strong well made body and quarters. Clear tan. Moved well.
3 Hope & Kane’s Paradise Fidelius for Jenesta B

POST GRADUATE BITCH (9,4)
1 Osborn’s Boyers Scarlatti B, Looked a picture, so balanced and full of quality. Typical head, balanced, deep & lean with correct proportions and good lines. Low ear set and feminine, gentle & intelligent expression. Long lean neck on well laid back shoulders, elbows well let down and pasterns upright on close nit feet. Well sprung ribs and nice body length. Strong quarters with correct angulations. Well carried tail, straight and short. Fills the eye on the move showing a steady easy gait with a controlled driving action. Yes, I would like a bit more coat & slightly cleaner tan, but this is one I would like to take home. Delighted to give her BB & BIS.
2 Frew’s Dunfionn Neave B, A lot to like about this bitch, but up against stiff competition. A balanced outline and moved well. Just lost out on expression, length of body, and performance being slightly fidgety.
3 Cuthbertson’s Gaidheal Tosca of Lainnireach B

MID LIMIT BITCH (4,1)
1 Hope & Kane’s Benbenuti Ceres for Jenesta B, Honest type of bitch with good conformation. Quite tall but balanced all through. Strong head, but could have a softer expression. Good reach of neck on well laid back shoulders. Sound quarters moved well. Won this class on her very good body conformation.
2 Searle’s Yennadon Echo of Scaraben B, Another nice bitch with sweeter head, but a touch longer and not quite the front construction or the general conformation of 1. Moved well.
3 McErlean’s Carrochan Suilvenbeag B

LIMIT BITCH (6,0)
1 Green’s Balnakeil An Cearcallach B, A classy bitch who I liked very much as a puppy and she has matured well. Sweet feminine head with good parallel lines, lean neck on well laid back shoulders, good body length, although overstretching tends to unbalance the overall picture. Strong quarters with correct rear angulation. Dark clean tan and well coated. Comes into her own on the move and powered round this small ring with drive & style to win a strong class that I would have been happy to award to any of the first three. RBB
2 Osborn’s Boyers Sedge B, Another quality bitch with correct conformation, not quite the soft expression or reach of neck of 1, but slightly better body length than 3. Splitting a few hairs here. Moved beautifully with power & drive.
3 Hall’s Paradise Hollie Dayz by Melveiw B

OPEN BITCH (3,2)
1 George-Plunkett’s Melkinmere Derwenthow B, Attractive compact bitch, good head with pleasant expression. Front has tightened nicely since I judged her as a youngster. Good length, sound quarters, but a touch more bend of stifle would give more flowing lines when stacked Looked good on the move however, with sound driving action.

PROGENY (5,4)
1 Cuthbertson’s Gaidheal Tosca of Lainnireach B, Three pups taking after their dam, making a very balanced group.

BRACE (5,3)
1 Green’s, Nicely matched pair, giving a balanced picture, moving in harmony.
2 Cuthbertson’s, Equally balanced brace, just coming second on earlier placings.
